Splurge or Save??

Hmmm….. should I buy the $1985 Valentino heels, or should I buy the $100 Aldo pumps? Most of us have these moments, maybe not with Valentino heels but whatever your version is of an expensive purchase.  Weighing the opportunity cost of purchasing the more expensive item or saving some $$ by buying the cheaper option. While I don’t condone buying everything designer, (t-shirts, bathing suits, flip flops, running shoes etc.) there are some items that may be worth that extra money. Here are the main reasons:

  • More expensive clothing is often better made with better materials and stitching. I love Forever 21 and urban planet but I don’t shop there for clothing pieces to last me 10 years let alone 10 months.
  • If you invest in expensive staples, even some that are custom made (suits for men, maybe tailored pants, or pencil skirts for women) they are guaranteed to fit you properly and last a long time.
  • Briefcases, ties, dress shirts, shoes, and jackets are all good examples of splurge items.

Splurge brands: Hugo Boss, Gucci, Valentino, Club Monaco, Salvatore Ferragamo

Save brands: Express, Ann Taylor, Aritzia, Wilfred

Do your research and find blogs that display really good “dupes” for expensive clothing to save some extra cash.

A dupe is a deception or trick into thinking it’s something it’s not.

Ex. This may look like a Birkin Bag, but it’s just a really good dupe.

It takes a little more time, but if you research and put together sensible outfits for work you’ll be able to find some great mixes of designer and non designer brands to wear together to compete and fantastic looking outfit.
